Central Ontario is the province's heartland. Beginning along the north shore of busy Lake Ontario, it follows the Trent-Severn waterway to the Kawartha Lakes, including the highlands of Victoria and the unique liftlocks of the city of Peterborough. As one continues north, more than 600 beautiful little lakes are scattered throughout the hills, cliffs and forests. The resort town and cycling trails of Haliburton are also found in this area. The back country was settled in the 19th century by new arrivals lured here by the lovely countryside surrounding the Kawartha Lakes, which quickly became a popular vacation spot. This Trail Guide consists of a series of maps showing multiple biking routes around Peterborough and in Central Ontario.
