The entrance to Hawk’s Ridge Trail begins at a short stream that dries into a road of sand and continues left onto a rocky path. The most difficult portion of the trail appears at the beginning when you must use a handrail to climb onto the first rock. The trail is easy to follow from there. You can’t see the hawks that live on the ledge, although they fly so close you feel the flap from their wings. Their plaintive cries will remain in your memory as a reminder of life on the edge. The trail leads beyond the sandy basin into Craig’s Pit and a scene that looks like a page from a fairy tale. The deep forest here is blanketed with wet mist from the lake, so that all the tree trunks and fallen logs are covered with a brilliant green moss and lichen.
