Serpent Mounds Park Trails

Serpent Mounds Park Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Two thousand years ago, Aboriginals known as the Point Peninsula People set up summer camp on the northern shore of Rice Lake, which was named for the abundant wild rice that grew there until a dam for the Trent Canal system flooded it. The Point Peninsula People buried their dead in nine burial mounds.

Six of the mounds combine in the form of a serpent to give the park its name. Although the mounds no longer appear in their original form, due to archaeological digs that took place here in the 1950s, they remain spiritually significant. Spiritual ceremonies frequently take place on the site."
