When the Dominion Atlantic Railway was abandoned from Kentville to Yarmouth in 1990, trail advocates dreamed of developing it into a recreational corridor. On October 26, 2011, the Annapolis Valley Trail System, a 200-km (125-mi) long network of trails, was officially opened. Although a few gaps remain, mostly around the huge bridges at Bear River and Weymouth, the majority of the former rail line is available for use by everything from walkers to ATVs.
