The Shubenacadie Canal and waterway, beginning in Halifax Harbour and connected by lakes and rivers to the Bay of Fundy, was the first “superhighway” in Nova Scotia. Although work started in 1826, difficult terrain and primitive construction methods prevented its completion until 1861. By then railways were already in operation, and they drove the canal company out of business in 1871.
