The South Side Hills are just south of downtown St. John's, rising up from the water above St. John's Harbor. The South Side Hills create a high ridge overlooking the city of St. John's and its harbor. The topography of the area lends itself to mountain biking, and this ride features quite a bit of climbing for such a short loop. the ride we describe is a challenging 3.5-mile loop that follows just one variation of the race circuit used by competitive riders in the area. The hard-packed dirt, singletrack trails that make up this course are quite unique to this part of Newfoundland, where virtually all the rides follow extremely rough and rocky terrain. The ride could in no way be described as easy, however, and though the trail conditions are good, the ride is characterized by a constant series of technical challenges. Aerobic fitness is a must, ad only riders with exceptional technical skills will be able to make it through this course cleanly.
