Mount Carleton Provincial Park in north-central New Brunswick. This 6-mile combination makes the most of the rolling, grassy terrain. Because these trails are used as cross-country ski trails in the winter, you will notice small "do not enter" signs at some of the trail junctions. These signs are intended to direct the flow of skiers in the winter. Our loop goes against the direction of the trails at several points, as it was our experience that the trail conditions in the summertime were more amenable to a counter-clockwise loop: you will climb the longest and steepest hills on dirt trails where the grass had been cut and descend on the more overgrown trails. The loop is short and fun and can easily be combined with some riding on dirt roads through the park. It demands strong but basic off-road skills and fitness, and some riders may find that the seeming remoteness of the trail and patches of tall grass offer an experience as close to bushwhacking as they will ever want to get.
