A string of subalpine lakes, magnificent views and a swim in cool, clear water are among the rewards for those who bear with the first trying 35 minutes of this hike. The route can be shortened to a 3-hour loop by doubling back near Owen Lake, but it is a pity to miss spectacular Eagle Bluff on the mountain’s southwest tip. Black Mountain is accessible in June, often earlier, and offers good walking until late fall.
