This excursion represents at least two walks, with a self-contained downriver portion along the Fraser’s Middle Arm and an equally self-contained walk along the West Dyke Trail overlooking Sturgeon Bank, though they may be combined in a single lengthy outing or, better still, a one-way walk with a car at each end. To reach the start of each walk from the north, leave Highway 99 at the Bridgeport Road turnoff (Exit 39A), which takes you onto Sea Island Way. Turn south on No. 3 Road, right on Cambie and left on River Road, stopping to park almost immediately if your intention is to walk downstream; otherwise, continue to drive to the parking lot near the river ’s mouth at Terra Nova, location of a long-gone cannery.
