Several options are available in this lush rain forest, home to some of the largest trees on Vancouver Island. Stroll on a recently completed loop just a short distance from the parking lot to take in a western red cedar measuring almost 5 meters in diameter, or hike one of the more strenuous routes along the valley’s bottom for a multi-day rain forest experience. Either way, be prepared for rough roads and unpredictable weather conditions, and be sure to bring your rain gear. Accessing the Walbran Valley without an accurate road map is at your own peril. In the heart of logging country, unmarked roads and logging spurs head off in all directions, ensnaring the unprepared. The map used for this description is the Guide to Forest Land of Southern Vancouver Island, available from sources listed at the end of the hike. For the route least likely to flatten your tires, plan to hike from the southern trailhead.
