For an afternoon or half-day nature walk, a hike along the picturesque Englishman River and its tributaries offers a diversity of ecological systems. Start with a steep descent and a slippery log crossing at the end of Englishman River Road and continue on to level trails and a tour of the Englishman River Salmon Enhancement Project. Follow this trail in spring and you may just see carpets of fawn lilies, coltsfoot, and bleeding heart nestled in among mature alder trees. Thanks to local beavers, this hike provides year-round birdwatching opportunities in the surrounding wetlands. Great horned owls, great blue herons, and myriad songbirds are just some of the area’s inhabitants.
