Tucked away on a plateau above the Stave dams, modest, unruffled Rolley Lake has much to offer an outdoor-loving family: spacious campsites, a swimming beach and picnic area, and a well-kept path around the lake. For those who prefer fishing to walking, small craft (but not motors) are allowed, and the lake is stocked with rainbow trout. Birds love Rolley Lake too. Woodpeckers and Stellar’s jays announce themselves; ospreys sail above the water; raiding parties of bushtits dart among the evergreen boughs. Most importantly, the bona fide hiking family can include the Rolley Falls Loop Trail in their itinerary, thereby adding waterfalls, views and exercise to the pleasures of the lake.
