Very difficult hiking with cross-country travel and routefinding challenges. Without a doubt this is the most adventurous stretch of the GDT. Nestled between dubious access points far from anywhere, the trail follows the Jackpine River through the recesses of the Willmore Wilderness Area. Largely a cross-country hike, this segment is straightforward enough to navigate but challenges your endurance. Despite hiking on the valley floor, you have excellent views of the surrounding peaks. Barricade, Lucifer, Saurian and Draco peaks all approach or exceed 10,000 feet in elevation and are surrounded by hanging glaciers and waterfalls. With a lengthy alternative route tracing the Divide, you can choose to witness these and other peaks at eye-level. This lengthy crest hike depends on your routefinding skills and requires greater effort but rewards bountifully. Your walk along the edge of this vast and secluded wilderness area will epitomize the Great Divide Trail experience.
