Klemtu is now a thriving modern community, but life here is as it’s always been—simple and timeless—and residents welcome visitors. Please respect the area’s rich cultural history. There are over one hundred documented ancient cultural sites, including abandoned native villages, fish traps, culturally modified trees and middens. If your timing is right, you may be invited to participate in a traditional potlatch or another cultural event in the newly constructed Big House, the most beautiful of its kind on the West Coast. The Central Coast is the ancient and contemporary homeland of the Heiltsuk, Kitasoo, Oweekeno and Nuxalk First Nations. For thousands of years, these peoples have derived their sustenance from the land and sea, with marine resources forming an integral part of their diet and economy.
