Statlu Lake sits in a pocket valley surrounded by mountains that draw climbers like pins to a magnet. The upper lake nestles in a bowl beneath the faces of Mount Clarke, and Recourse and Viennese Peaks. This jewel of an area is accessible only after a 39 km (24 mi) drive over the Chehalis logging road system, dusty in dry weather and muddy in wet. To compound the difficulty, the last 5 km (3.1 mi) of the road has 194 water bars. These were constructed on the recommendation of the coroner after three fatal accidents at Statlu Falls. For those who accept these conditions, the reward is well worth the inconvenience.
