This 82-kilometer (49-mile) drive, starting where the Revelstoke to Golden drive (Drive 17) leaves off, is a spectacular mountain drive through BC’s gateway to the famous Canadian Rocky Mountain national parks. From the recreation-oriented town of Golden, the Trans Canada quickly enters the foothills of the Rockies before reaching the main divide of the range in Yoho National Park. Most of the awe-inspiring scenery on this drive is in the second half as the highway climbs to Kicking Horse Pass in the shadow of towering, cathedral-like peaks. The drive ends in Lake Louise in Banff National Park, the hub of several more scenic drives. Special attractions: One beautiful, postcard-like view after another; Emerald Lake, Yoho, and Lake O’Hara Valleys; the fascinating history of the Kicking Horse Pass. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.

Another beautiful drive through the Canadian Rockies - saw lots of bighorn sheep just coming out of Golden (we actually made this drive twice during the week, and saw them both times), and the vista of Emerald Lake, at Field, is not to be missed! Lake Louise was beautiful without question -- but nearby Lake Moraine was gorgeous, and the three in our party all agreed that it had an edge over Lake Louise - more dynamic. Don't miss any of these unbelievably aqua lakes!
