Mount McGuire tends to be overshadowed by its more spectacular mountain neighbours: Tomyhoi Peak, the Border Peaks and Slesse Mountain. Yet it is a short ascent from the end of the logging roads, and the views from the top are stunning. The trade-off, as in much of today’s access, is the industrial wasteland created by the very roads that you use to approach the mountains. From the top, the Chilliwack and Fraser Valleys seem to be right below your feet. The little lake in a bowl on Mount McGuire’s north side probably has not seen more than a dozen visitors for all its closeness to the population centres. As you turn to descend, the sightline of Ten Mile Ridge running southeast draws your vision towards the Border Peaks. It is hard to turn back down into the valleys.
