The West Coast Trail

The West Coast Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The West Coast Trail is relatively easy to hike in its northernmost section, from Pachena Bay to Walbran Creek. To the south, from Walbran Creek to Port Renfrew, the hike is relatively safe but not necessarily easy; there are still dangers for the unwary hiker. Whereas the trail is still a challenge to the average hiker, it is no longer the true wilderness it once was. The trail may be hiked in either direction. Traditionally, the hike has been described from the south or the Port Renfrew trailhead to the northern terminus at Bamfield.

Many people prefer to hike the trail in this direction to get the southern, more difficult part over with when they are still fresh. There are others, however, who prefer to hike the easier northern section while their packs are heavy and full of food and to break into the trail gradually. Significant portion of trail on difficult terrain, roots or rocky paths; presence of mud during wet conditions."

We hiked north to south, getting the tough stuff out of the way first, which I would recommend. We completed the trail in 5 nights/6 days. While difficult and somewhat crowded in certain campsites, it was worth every second. We were up-close-and-personal with a whale (there were many others farther out), saw baby seals, wolverine, otter, fabulous tide pools, waterfalls and so so much more. Don't miss the cheeseburgers at Chez Monique’s, a welcome pleasure after days of hiking. There are many obstacles along the hike including; stairs, ladders, roots, mud holes, slippery rock, and loose boards on some boardwalks. This can be very challenging if you have any kind of knee injury. Otherwise, My 14 year old nephew hiked without problems. Overall, this was one of the most memorable trips I've experienced.

Great hike. Not difficult. Get ready for the rain. Nice opportunity to tent on the beach and meet friends. Do not forget the Burger midway
