There are two mountains in the Cariboo with similar names: Mount Timothy near Lac la Hache and Big Timothy featured here. Theories as to the origin of the name differ: one tying it to the wild Timothy grass, while another has it a corruption of the Shuswap name Takomkane. Whatever the source, Big Timothy certainly yields big views. From the saddle, looking back, there are glorious vistas of nearby Boss and Deception mountains and the peaks of Wells Gray Park. Beyond the saddle awaits some gentle walking around a series of tarns to a larger pond at the end of the alpine meadow. Big Timothy itself is a treeless volcanic cinder cone rising out of the meadow like an upturned cornet.
