Although painter Roland Gissing acquainted the name Black Rock with something sinister, when I think `Black Rock' I see in my mind's eye this big solitary mountain, topped by a lookout, which has provided me with many a good day in the hills. It was Jack Carter's favorite lookout mountain. Understandably. There's nothing boring about this pack trail to the summit. Built in 1928, it takes a daring line up the south slope of the mountain, causing you at many points to wonder where it can possibly go next. Of course, its roughness may not be everybody's cup of tea.
