This valley is a popular place, especially on summer weekends. Campers, horseback riders, fishermen, off-roaders, motorists-expect to meet them all. Timing can make or break your trip so get an early start and beat the competition or better yet, try a weekday. In any case be prepared to share the country with other users. Onion Lake is a beautiful subalpine lake nestled within a major front ranges basin. The route follows alongside a very expansive and attractive valley-bottom shrub meadow and the scenery along the way more than makes up for the presence of motorists. Although the 2 km after the starting point are rough, dusty and in the trees, the better part of the road follows a beautiful valley-bottom willow meadow. Vistas include Ram Ridge to the east and distant mountains to the west. It’s easy riding on a clay and gravel road to staging area. Continue on for Onion Lake, a beautiful spot nestled among another 3.2 km to Canary Creek.
