Hikers who stick to official trails are missing one of the finest mountain tarns in all of the Canadian Rockies; only Lake McArthur in Yoho shares the same incredible color. The logging road is bikeable to just past the second sawmill site at km 8. After this expect steep sections and some scree. Because of river crossings, notably the wading of the Highwood River, reserve for later in the season. Be alert for grizzlies.
