The Bishop Creek trail and the ridge above reveal unexpected delights that certainly thrilled me the first time I walked this way. Wolf and grizzly sightings are an extra bonus. It's always seemed to me the ideal trail for clubs with A and B groups, B doing the easy walk to the col and A group striding manfully over the ridge tops (easy scrambling and steepish slopes). Biking to the junction of Loomis and Bishop creeks shortens the day considerably.
