Strenuous hiking up poorly maintained trail and over one high pass with some routefinding challenges. This segment involves a difficult hike in an enchanting area outside the national parks known as the White Goat Wilderness Area. The only mode of travel sanctioned within the wilderness area is by foot and there seems to be only a handful of hikers who travel the length of Cataract Creek each year. The potentially difficult creek fords and rough trail conditions probably deter many potential visitors from traveling in this remote area. The trail up Cataract Creek rewards backpackers with a collection of pictographs and a supreme view from Cataract Pass, one of the highest passes on the GDT.
