Incredibly, The Fortress, which appears impregnable from Highway 40, is a walk-up from the back, accessible to hikers who can handle scree and easy scrambling. There's even an intermittent trail. For vertigo sufferers there's certainly not much to be scared of. However, don't think of it as just a detour from the col; plan an early start from the parking lot.
