After years of trampling by provincial team skiers en route to the Haig Icefield (they now have to walk round the long way), the trail is a lot clearer and takes you to the base of the French Glacier. In summer, going further requires all the paraphernalia of glacier travel. Those innocent looking snowfields have snared quite a few people, including a ranger fortuitously accompanied by two search and rescue experts. Rather than freeze to death down a crevasse, I suggest spending more time enjoying the waterfalls.

I consider myself in pretty good shape, and I found this hike challenging but very, very enjoyable. I really felt like I accomplished something great, and the views are out of this world. I will never forget this hike.
