The pond was first noted by M.B.B. Crockford and Gordon Scruggs in 1946/7 while investigating the geology of the Ribbon Creek area. Unmarked on the topo map and hidden by a fold of the hills from the eye of the ridge walker on Mt. Allan, the pond remained undetected by the vast majority of hikers (though not by climbers doing the Lougheed traverse) until 1972 when Harry Connolly's much publicized attempts to reach the lake by snowmobile and on foot were splashed across the pages of the Calgary Herald. Liberal use of the words `impossible' and `impenetrable' was alarming and seemed to put it in the same category as Stanley's forays into darkest Africa. There is, in fact, a quite reasonable route.
