Grotto Canyon Professional Review and Guide
"Stoney underfoot, this is nevertheless a fairly easy walk through an incredibly spectacular canyon known for its petrographs. You're sure to be entertained by rock climbers and even musicians! In Spring expect running water and stream hopping."
--Gillean Daffern, Canmore & Kananaskis Country: Short Walks for Inquiring Minds (Rocky Mountain Books).
The trip was great, weather was +3 degrees Celcius and the sun was shining. The walk was quite easy but because you walk up a creek canyon the trip is quite worthwhile! The pictographs (which are reported to be 500-1000+ years old) are very neat to see! They are found on the left just before the waterfalls.
Actually best in the winter when the canyon floor is a continuous sheet of ice (best to wear Kahtoolas or some additional traction on your boots). One of the pictographs is thought to be Anasazi - just before you turn to see the ice climbers at the end of the canyon look up to the left. Winter is also a great time to book a guided trip into the Rat's Nest Cave, also on Grotto Mt.
