Rock Isle Lake via Sunshine

Rock Isle Lake via Sunshine Professional Review and Guide

"The long trudge up the road eventually brings you to the alpine larches and open country for which Sunshine Meadows is famous. The rest of the steep ascent to Rock Isle Lake is scenically delightful. With picturesque islets and vast panoramas, deep-blue Rock Isle Lake is a favourite destination.

If you still have energy, you can go on to do the circuit of Grizzly and Larix lakes (a 4.2 km circuit) or climb 120 m to Standish Viewpoint, a 1.2 km hike to a platform overlooking all three lakes with distant views to Mt. Assiniboine, highest summit in Banff Park."

Park in the large paved lot and ride the bus or lift up to the lodge. $11.00 round trip. Last bus down is at 4:30. Check with sunshine Village for exact times. Trail is pretty much uphill for half mile then opens up for a great view of the Continental Divide. Then Down to Rock Island Lake. We were there in September when all the Larch trees were golden. Follow the trail around the lake and down the steps to see two other scenic lakes, Grizzley & Laryx., Trail makes a circle back to Rock Island One of the best hikes around Banff. In the summer of 2003, Sunshine Village ran a bus from the parking area to the Village. I took the bus to the top of the mountain, then hiked the lakes loops. Beautiful views and easy hiking.
