Great Divide Trail: Sunshine to Highway 93 Professional Review and Guide
"Strenuous hiking on good trails with long climbs over three high passes Almost as popular as the Mount Assiniboine area is Egypt Lake in Banff National Park. The trails in the area attract quite the backcountry crowd during nice stretches of weather in the summer. The GDT descends to Egypt Lake from the stunning Healy Pass where you can get a good view of the Pharaoh Creek valley and Egypt Lake. The ascent over Whistling Pass is strenuous, giving you the feeling that you are mountaineering rather than hiking."
--Dustin Lynx, Hiking Canada's Great Divide Trail (Rocky Mountain Books).
I started at the Sunshine Village parking lot on and hiked up the Gondola Rd to Simpson Pass, and on to Healy Pass, Egypt lake, etc. Doing this route avoided the first part of the Healy Creek Trail, adding Simpson Pass instead. The Gondola Rd was tedius and steep, but the views through Simpson Pass were amazing and made it worth the effort. The trail from here to Egypt Lake was great. It seemed like every time I lifted my head there was a different landscape to take in. Egypt Lake Campground is set in a beautiful area, next to a creek with views of the mountains surrounding the nearby lakes. We stayed here two nites, allowing us to day hike in the area to seek Talc, Scarab, Mummy, and Egypt Lakes all in about a 10K hike. We hiked on the next day to Shadow Lake Campground via Whistling Pass. The view from the bridge over Shadow Lake is unbelievable, but the trail here was . We hiked out Gibbons Pass the next day, to Vista Lake. This part of the hike was very strenuous but very scenic. Weather on the trip was cool - in the 30s at nite and warming to the 50s and lower 60s during the day. It was always very cool and windy on the passes, and it rained every nite. (Date of trip - Sep1-5, 2005).
