Moderate hiking on good trail with a long climb over Citadel Pass. Rolling alpine meadows are the hallmark of this leg of the GDT. You wander alongside Og Creek the length of an impressive meadow with good views over your shoulder of Mount Assiniboine. After a winding hike through the Valley of the Rocks, you climb up to Citadel Pass and the start of the renowned Sunshine Meadows. The GDT follows the two most popular trails that access the heart of Assiniboine Provincial Park. You can also access the area by hiking 30 km from Kootenay National Park starting at the Simpson River trailhead on Highway 93. You follow the river and then Surprise Creek over Ferro Pass. The easiest way to arrive at Lake Magog is by helicopter. Helicopters service the Mount Assiniboine Lodge and operate Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
