Strenuous climbs over several passes on an excellent trail. Welcome to the Rockwall trail in Kootenay National Park. This is a busy but extremely gorgeous backcountry hiking destination. During some years the snow does not completely vanish from the trail until August. The short season condenses many of the trail users into one month, so getting a wilderness permit can be more challenging than hiking the mountainous terrain. The GDT follows the Rockwall trail along the foot of a kilometer-high escarpment for nearly 30 km over high passes and ridges spending a lot of time in the alpine zone.
