Located beneath awesome cliffs and a giant scree slope on the east face of Cascade Mountain, C Level Cirque is a rewarding, if somewhat stark, destination. Marmots, pikas, and golden-mantled ground squirrels frequent the boulder-strewn cirque. En route, a branch trail leads to a giant slack heap from where there is a good panorama. The name of the cirque derives from C Level seam, highest of the coal workings operated from 1904–1922 at the town of Bankhead. Three years after the mines closed, the town ceased to exist. This trail goes near several open vent shafts from old mines below. These shafts are fenced off, but keep well clear because the surrounding ground is unstable and the timber supports for the old mine shafts are nearly a century old.
