Alaska Fishing Trip Information

Alaska Fishing Trip Information
Anglers of all levels regard Alaska as a dream destination for fishing. While most folks would consider the best fishing to be in a remote part of this vast state, that is not always the case. The capital city of Juneau offers some amazing salmon fishing within a half-hour taxi ride of downtown.

Sightseeing in Juneau

There is quite a bit to see and do within walking distance of downtown Juneau. If you are only going to be there for a few days, you'll want to be able to do as much as possible without having to do a lot of driving. There are shopping stops galore in downtown Juneau as this is a major port for cruise ships going up the inner passage. There is Mt. Roberts at the one end of town that you could either hike up or take the scenic tram ride to the top. A short taxi ride out of town will take you to the Mendenhall Glacier and a helicopter ride to the top of the glacier could be arranged if you so desire.

Where to Fish

The heart of the salmon fishing in the Juneau area takes place in Auke Bay. There are numerous charter boats that provide all the gear, bait and licenses to put groups of two to six people into a load of fresh salmon. Since this area is loaded with inlets and islands, the seas do not get rough and make for a pleasurable experience.

Trolling for Salmon in Auke Bay

Local charter fisherman who ply the waters of Auke Bay use devices called downriggers that get the bait down to where the fish are feeding. The fishing line is attached to a release device so when a salmon hits the lure, the line pops free of the downrigger and the angler is free to fight the fish without any hindrance.

Fast Action on the Ocean

It can be a challenge to keep five rods trolling in the water at one time as the salmon bite constantly in Auke Bay. Coho salmon are the main catch during the summer months, but large Pink salmon, Chum salmon and Chinook salmon are common here as well. When the action gets started, it is a non-stop rotation of taking turns grabbing the rods and fighting fish. Be prepared to reel in trophy fish in short order as salmon feeding in the ocean are very aggressive.

A Feast for the Salmon

It is no coincidence that there are so many salmon in the Auke Bay region as there is a lot of food for the salmon in this area due to a strong ocean current that runs through the area. This attracts large number of krill, herring and salmon to the area each summer. There is so much food that whales are also a common sight in the summer months.

Lures for Ocean Salmon

The local lure of choice in Auke Bay is a flasher rig with a tinsel fly trailing behind. The flasher does a good job of attracting hungry salmon on the open ocean with its fish calling action. Behind the flasher, some captains like to implore either a plastic squid or a tinsel fly with a herring strip. There are times when the rigs tipped with herring strips will produce larger fish as the natural scent of the fresh herring is too much to resist.

The Catch Comes to You

Arrangements can be made for the processing and shipping of your catch in Auke Bay. The Alaska Seafood Company works with most of the charter boats in the area and staffers go to the docks the same day and pick up the coolers of fish for processing. You can have the salmon filleted, vacuum packed and flash frozen for delivery. After making arrangements with Fed Ex, a box of fresh Alaskan salmon with arrive at your door. If you are going to be in the Juneau area this summer, be sure to save some time to experience the great ocean trolling the opportunities that Auke Bay and the Juneau area has to offer.
