Transcript for: How to Shift When Mountain Biking

"Hi, I am Aaron Phillips for Expert Village. The left shifter is going to control the front chain ring and usually there is an indicator up here to let you know what gear you are in. One is generally the smallest chain ring, that is your easiest gear. Three is usually your biggest chain ring, aka the harder gear. These are shifters that are a little bit different from normal, you will shift to your harder gear like this and your easier gear like this. The rear shifter, generally will also have an indicator on it. So watch for one being the lowest gear and usually nine or eight being the highest gear also called the hardest gear. One thing that is kind of interesting about this, your lowest gear is highest up on this cassette. Your highest gear is lowest down on this cassette. Most of the time people sort of talk about this in a backwards way considering that the high gear and that the low gear. This is high gear, your small cog on this cassette and this is low gear, your small cog on this cassette, your large cog on this cassette rather. Your largest chain ring is your highest gear, your smallest chain ring is your lowest or easiest gear. You've got a chain ring in the middle and on a lot of trail rides this is where you are going to be most of the times is in the middle chain ring. Generally speaking you don't want to have your chain on the smallest in the front and the smallest in the rear, kind of somewhere in the middle is a little bit better you can stress out some of the drive train parts doing that."
