"In this segment we're going to go over the first aspect of belaying. As my climber moves up the wall it's my job as the belayer to keep the rope tight. You want to make sure there is never a looseness in the rope. That way if the climber does fall they are going to fall a foot or eighteen inches, not six or seven feet, and this is how we do that. It's three hand motions that we're repeating over and over again. So our start position should look like this, with our left hand at about chest height, we grab the rope in front of us. Right hand, palm facing you, basically with your pinky touching your belay device. So, this is how it should look. Step one, we are going to pull up with our right hand to about eye level. Our left hand comes off the rope, grabs the rope above your right hand, so that you can slide back down and you are back to where you started. The golden rule here is that your right hand should never ever leave the rope. Your right hand pulls and slides but never leaves the rope. And like I said before we're just keeping up with the climber making sure there's never a looseness in the rope."
