"Hi, I'm Kate I'm with Zoar Outdoor on behalf of expertvillage.com and we're going to be talking about hiking today. When you're hiking in the woods a good thing to keep in mind is walking quietly, this allows you to walk safer, it allows you to possibly enjoy nature more and it's also courteous to other people around you. When I walk quietly I watch what I'm doing, I look for any branches on the ground or rocks and I try and avoid them. Any movement with your feet, you just want to kind of avoid any hazards you might have. This also allows you to hike safer because I'm not going to be tripping on anything because I'm trying to walk quietly so I can see the ground and then also it allows me to kind of scope the area, possibly just be seeing wildlife or anything else. This also includes when you're walking quietly while on your cell phone. I don't necessarily like to hike with someone who is going to be on their cell phone the whole time because if there is any wildlife out there, I'm never going to see it. So when you hike around with trekking poles or without, just watch your steps, avoid any rocks or sticks and try and make it as if you've never been here before and you're going to leave it just like it is. So walking quietly is a great way to go out for hikes in the woods."

The first and most fundamental thing is never hike alone. There are too many situations, especially as an unexperienced hiker, where you may find yourself without anyone to help you. So the buddy system works and applies very much in hiking.
