Wows and Woes
Wow:
There's nothing like the exhilarating feeling of cruising through the Pacific being pulled by a 100 pound fish. If you've got the strength to conquer this fish, show it the respect it deserves and have yourself some of the freshest sashimi you'll come across.
Woe:
Some of the smaller, unlicensed fishing charters ignore the rules by killing the fish, then dumping them back in the water instead of setting them free while still alive.
Insider Tips
If you're not an experienced fisherman, join one of the well-known teams in Cabo. They know the rules of the land and have a respect for the fish. They also know the best places for a catch.
Bottom Line
Sportfishing put Cabo San Lucas on the map and is the main reason to visit this Mexican resort town.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
I grew up fishing in Hawaii and it's one of the few sports I can handle. Or so I thought until I got to Cabo San Lucas with a group of deep-sea enthusiasts. Screaming, hollering, drinking and back slapping; apparently that's what deep-sea fishing is about. None of this interested me until we caught a 70-pound yellowfin tuna. Now that's memorable.
