Denali Sourdough Cabins in Denali National Park

Denali Sourdough Cabins in Denali National Park
Denali National Park in Alaska is home to the highest mountain in the United States, Mount McKinley. Adventurous travelers will find amazing backcountry treks into the wilderness. The 45 Sourdough cabins with views of the mountains or forest are away from the main lodging facilities on a steep dirt road. Ice, a pay phone and vending machines are in a central location. Cabins are small, heated and have one queen or two double beds. Complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate are available at the lodge, which is a short walking distance away.

Wows and Woes

The cabins, being away from the main accommodations, gift shop and restaurants, are extremely peaceful and quiet. Beds are comfortable and the cabins have a very homey feel.
The park does not provide coffeemakers, refrigerators or microwaves in the cabins, so unless you bring your own, you're limited to eating in the restaurants. Cell phone coverage is mostly nonexistent.

Insider Tips

Instead of driving, catch the shuttle buses to and from the cabins to the main lodge and many areas of the park. Book your cabin as far ahead of time as possible; these cabins sell out quickly in the summer season, which is the only time lodging in the park is available. Try the delicious large pizza at the pizza restaurant; it will feed four to six people.

Bottom Line

The Denali Sourdough cabins feature comfortable beds and offer a much less expensive way to stay at the park than other available lodging.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

It might sound strange, but my most memorable moment was waking up one morning and being able to see Mount McKinley, which is not always available for viewing because of fog and clouds. The mountain is truly spectacular. I thoroughly enjoyed my two visits to this park and like staying in the cabins away from the noise of the main lodging and restaurant area.
