Wows and Woes
One can walk neck deep into the sea in the waters of the Dominican Republic and still see your toes wiggling in the sand. The national parks show an array of nature, from a tropical forest to a marine sanctuary to a semi-desert forest.
Safety is a concern when traveling to the Dominican. The most common crimes are theft, and Americans are a particularly strong target. In addition, the government is frequently in turmoil and political protests can get in the way of a relaxing trip.
Insider Tips
Lake Enriquillo is a stunning lake to visit where you can see crocodiles, pink flamingos and iguanas in one fell swoop.
Bottom Line
Take precautions and read up on government sites about safety before you go to the Dominican Republic but definitely go. Its beauty is pure perfection.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
I went to check out Santo Domingo as a possible place to shoot a film. I went from beach to beach to find a private, small hotel situated near the water, and in the process I realized I couldn't shoot a film here. Each beach was so entrancing and such a pleasure to swim in, I could never get to work. I spent most of my days floating in liquid bliss.
