A Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort Review

A Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort Review
Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, offers snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross-country and downhill skiing on two mountains in the winter. Summer activities include mountain biking, hiking and fly-fishing. The resort is open all year, with lodging of 1,400 rooms and condominiums. Lodging amenities include exercise rooms, pools, 19 restaurants, Jacuzzis, hot tubs, coffeemakers, complimentary high-speed Internet access and fireplaces. The slopes open at 9 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m., except for Silver Creek, which offers night skiing until 9 p.m.

Wows and Woes

Condominiums at Rimfire include free DVD rentals and two televisions. Pizza at Cheat Pizza restaurant is gourmet quality. Views of the slopes from some condos are stunning.
Some furniture is a bit threadbare. The food is very expensive. Studios at Highland House condos are small with no bureaus and have only mini-blinds on the windows. Cell phone reception is spotty at best.

Insider Tips

Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort is the largest in the Southeast, so it is popular and crowded. Go skiing in midweek to avoid some of the crowds on weekends and have short waits in lift lines. Try the delicious waffles with fruit at the Black Run Sugar House restaurant. Avoid the Shavers Centre restaurant for breakfast; it only offers precooked foods.

Bottom Line

This popular destination has activities for the whole family. Skiing is excellent and facilities are modern. But it is very expensive so consider that before you make your reservation.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

My most memorable moment happened in the late afternoon while I was skiing on a Tuesday in late spring. There were very few people on the slopes, so it was a breathtaking and relaxing run. I stopped to admire the view and a deer family came into view. They stood quietly looking at me before they sprinted away. I only wish I'd had my camera to record the moment.
