Inca Hiking Trail Review

Inca Hiking Trail Review
The Inca Hiking Trail is a walking path that leads through the Andes to the gates of the ancient Incan city, Machu Picchu. The trail is part of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary--which includes Incan ruins--as well as the surrounding mountains and forests. To follow the Inca Trail to get to Machu Picchu is to follow the path of the ancient Incas. You cannot legally hike the Inca trail alone. If you want to make the journey, you must use an agency that has cleared the rights for group hiking. I used Wayki Trek for my hiking journey.

Wows and Woes

The Inca Hiking Trail is full of sights to behold. Tour guides with Wayki Trek have plenty of knowledge regarding the trail and Machu Picchu that makes having a guide feel more like a privilege than a necessity.

Since tours with Wayki Trek are done in groups, you cannot stop and linger in places that you would like to explore more fully. The parts of the tour that get the most attention are those that the tour guide is most interested in or knows the most about.

Insider Tips

Food on the Wayki Trek hike is prepared for you as part of the tour cost. These foods are general and not always safe for those with food allergies or preferences. If you have a food issue, it is advisable to bring your own food.

Bottom Line

Going with a tour group is the only way to hike the Inca Hiking Trail and see Machu Picchu; Wayki Trek served this purpose perfectly.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

Machu Picchu may be the city to see, but it is not the only city along the trail. From the moment we came upon the first remnants of ancient life in the area until we reached our destination, it was like walking back through time.
