Wows and Woes
With approximately 450 islets and islands off the coast, it is easy to find your own private island to explore. The savage natural beauty of Belize is easily the country's best feature, from the glittering beaches to its lush rain forests to its underwater paradise.
As friendly as all the people are in Belize, this is a developing nation, and safety is always a concern, particularly at night. There are parts of the country when the wealth parity is uncomfortable and being a flashy tourist is not appropriate.
Insider Tips
The U.S. dollar is very strong, but there is little in terms of souvenirs. Keep an eye out for Mayan-made goods near the ruin sites and the occasional markets in Belize City. There are many companies offering fishing expeditions and other activities; don't be fooled by low-quality fakes. Look for an experienced and reputable company that offers everything from jungle tours, cave tubing and diving excursions.
Bottom Line
Belize is a paradise of sun and jungle ready to welcome tourists looking for diving, fishing, snorkeling, hiking and other Caribbean adventures for a great price.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
Hiking through the rain forest, monkeys and tropical birds screeching at us from above, I thought the day could not get any better. Then we put on our headlamps, jumped on our tubes and were swept through the underground caves. What an amazing experience.
