Inca Hiking Trail Reviews

Inca Hiking Trail Reviews
The Inca Trail is one of the most famous places to hike in South America. The rugged terrain in this beautiful section of the Andes Mountains in Peru is stunning. Steep peeks and subtropical jungles referred to as "cloud forest" make up much of the trail. It is a 45 km trek from the Andean town of Chilca to the ruins at Machu Picchu.

Wows and Woes

There are many amazing things to see when hiking the Inca Trail. Dead Woman's Pass is especially impressive. This is the highest point on the trail (13,650 feet).
It takes about four days to complete the trek from Chilca to Machu Picchu. You will have to sleep in rough camping conditions, but this could be viewed as a positive for most people looking to take an adventure in the Andes.

Insider Tips

Spend a few days in Cuzco to acclimate to the altitude before hiking the Inca Trail. Points along the trail reach more than 13,000 feet. Many visitors experience altitude sickness, and one of the best things to drink is coca tea to relieve the symptoms.

Bottom Line

It is well worth the hike to see this part of Peru. The Andes Mountains are beautiful, and the ruins at Machu Picchu are incredible.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

I was astounded by the mysterious beauty of Machu Picchu and the surrounding valley as I reached Intipunku, the Gate of the Sun. This is a great spot to take scenic photos.
