Wows and Woes
Wild horses are not only present on the island, they are everywhere. If you have spent time in national forests where you search desperately for signs of wildlife, you will be in for a surprise with Assateague's horses, who often wander right up to your campsite.
Since this is a refuge for horses and not people, there are few amenities. There is very little shade around campsites and the shower houses can run out of toilet paper. It's a good idea to bring an awning and some toilet paper.
Insider Tips
Bring plenty of air-tight containers for storing any food. The wild horses can smell any food left inside tents or campers and will chew through canvas or netting to get to it.
Bottom Line
Camping on Assateague Island is an experience for those who want to see wild horses in their natural environment; not for those looking for a host of amenities.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
