The Elbow Lake trail is great for those who like a variety of topography without any prolonged overly steep inclines. Approximately a third of the way in there are a series of switchbacks on the open hillside where, if the sun is hot, can be a little dehydrating. Beyond that the trail enters the shelter of the trees and ambles up at a more leisurely incline. The high alpine lake is pristine and, if you have energy left, is a perfect base for further explorations. Across the lake to the NNW, 1350 ft of scrambling takes you to the western base of Mt Cowan and another lake that, at 10,000 ft, remains frozen much of the year. Alternately, 600 ft up to the NE, on the east side of Cowan, you'll find a smaller but equally pristine lake at its SE base. This is a popular big game area, horses and hunters keep the trail clear.
