Sheltered as parkland since the early 1900s, the land currently encompassing Storm King State Park was victim to a rampant forest fire in 1999. Exploding military ammunition was discovered during the fire, and as a result, the park was closed for much of 2000 while clean-up efforts ensued. Today, the park is fully open and offers amazing views of the Hudson River, Bannerman Island, the village of Cold Spring, Constitution Marsh, and numerous other points of interest along the ridges just south of Storm King Mountain. This south loop hike bypasses Butter Hill and Storm King Mountain, but is more lightly traveled.
