Rocky Knob Trail - Fayetteville Pennsylvania Hikes

Rocky Knob is an interpretive trail on the ridge of South Mountain, just east of the Appalachian Trail, which it crosses. Much of the trail is located on an old road that was a failed attempt to connect Ridge and Birch Run Roads, which parallel each other. The trail includes several interesting features, such as large ant mounds colonized by the Allegheny mound-building ants. There are views of Rocky Knob (best in spring and fall), and an optional spur trail that is quite challenging goes to the summit of Rocky Knob, where there is also a good view. Blueberry and huckleberry bushes grow along the old road—their berries make nice munching in late July and August.
