Go John Trail - Cave Creek Arizona Hikes

Go John Trail is one of the best moderate loop trails you can hope for. Scenic hills surround the Cave Creek Recreation Area, and the wavy hike contains just enough ups and downs to keep you on your toes. Part of Maricopa County’s regional park system, Cave Creek Recreation Area spans nearly 3,000 acres of mountain preserves north of Phoenix and west of the town of Cave Creek. Go John Trail, the most popular trail in the park, encircles its most prominent feature, a 3,060-foot-tall mountain. Contrary to popular belief, however, Go John Mountain is not the mountain at the trail’s center. It’s actually located outside the park to the east. The Go John Trail offers an excellent loop hike through scenic landscape typical of the mountains near Cave Creek. This trail touches hills, plains, dry washes, and unique rock formations, and of course offers plenty of desert flora. Abandoned mineshafts provide additional diversions on this hike. However, prepare to share the trail with other hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers.
