This adventure leads you north on Skyline Drive, following the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the Shenandoah National Park. As on the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are no red lights, stop signs, commercial vehicles, or rush hour traffic on its entire 107- mile length. Only two roads enter (or rather, merge with) the Skyline Drive. You ride on well-maintained and deliciously curvy asphalt. But it’s more than just a pretty ribbon of blacktop. Expect amenities including fuel, lodging with a view, dining on mountain outcroppings, wilderness hiking, and wildlife. Lovely vistas abound. Points of interest: Wildlife, Loft Mountain Wayside (with restaurant, fuel, lodging), Lewis Mountain Wayside (cabins, gift shop, camping), Big Meadows Wayside (visitor center, gift shop, museum, lodge, restaurant, cabins, fuel), Skyland Lodge (restaurant, horseback riding, lodging, taproom), Elkwallow Wayside (groceries, carry-out food, fuel), Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, dozens of scenic overlooks.
